Local Haunts Local Haunts

Boston is an old city. With old cities, there have been a lot of people who lived and died there. And that, of course, means lots of haunted and spooky spots dating back to the founding of our nation. There are quite a few spots worth noting here, but I want to focus on a place near and dear to my heart, the old Corbitt house.

The Corbitt house is a very old home that was built before the Civil War. It is the only building left on its block to have been constructed before the turn of the century. But the fact that its old isn't what makes it spooky. No, not at all. Legend has it that it is haunted!

As the story goes, people who live in the house experience supernatural occurrences and are forced out of the home. Some flee with terror in the middle of the night or fall victim of the evil spirits in the house! There were apparently several instances of this almost a hundred years ago, but for much of this century it has remained vacant and the spirits dormant. That is, until the unfortunate Macario family moved in in 1993. The family was made up of two kids, a boy and a girl, and their parents. After a month or so in the house, the Dad started to act strangely. He would swear he heard things moving around at night in the other room when no one was in there. Whatever the ghost was doing eventually got to Mr. Macario and pushed him over the edge. He kept saying that there was a devil in the house. It got so bad that he had to be committed to the local psychiatric hospital. Soon after, Mrs. Macario had to be hospitalized as well after also suffering a mental break. The kids got sent to live with relatives in Washington state. They never said what exactly happened in the house that drove them mad. No one has lived in the house ever since!

How do I know so much about the Corbitt place? Well, it's in my neighborhood and my Mom followed the story when it happened. She's the one I interviews for my report. Thanks Mom!
